The Virginia men's and women's swimming teams both successfully opened up their seasons on Friday against West Virginia at the Aquatic & Fitness Center. The men's team (1-0) won 125-93 while the women's team (1-0) downed the Mountaineers (0-1) by a final score of 120-94.
For the men's squad, Virginia's relay team of Chad Barlow, Guy Yimsomruay, Michael Raab and Jonathan Haag won the men's 400-yard medley by more than five seconds.
The Cavaliers' victory also was highlighted by great individual performances. Sophomore Ian Prichard won the 100 freestyle with a time of 9 minutes, 12.49 seconds. Sophomore Adam Kerpelman won two events, taking both the 100 and 200 free events. Sophomore Luke Anderson was also a dual winner, with victories in the 50 free with a time of 20.60, and the 500 free with a time of 4:35.10. Freshman Bo Greenwood claimed the 200 individual medley title with a time of 1:52.02. Junior Dan Zurowski was victorious in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:52.03. Sophomore Luke Wagner won in the 200 backstroke and junior diver Pete Amstutz won both the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions.
The Virginia women's team had similar success against West Virginia. The Cavaliers notched eight consecutive victories to start the meet.
The Cavaliers took the first victory of the meet in the 200 medley relay. Freshmen Andrea Georoff and Carrie Ellis, and seniors Caitlin Anderson and Megan Roesch finished with a time of 1:48.23.
Roesch also posted an individual victory in the 50 free, finishing with a time of 23.46. Sophomore Carlie Dykehouse captured two victories by winning the 1000 freeand the 100 fly.
Junior Mirjana Bosevska finished first in both the 200 free and the 100 back.
Junior Cara Lane also recorded dual victories, winning the 100 free and the 200 IM five seconds ahead of the next swimmer. Freshmen Katie McWilliams and Coco Buck also posted victories for Virginia. Junior diver Alison Sharp won both the one-meter and the three-meter diving events for the Cavaliers.
The Cavalier men's and women's swimming and diving teams will return to action on Oct. 27 when they travel to Clemson for a 1 p.m. meet with the Tigers.
