Tribe corner Cavs, snag narrow win

WILLIAMSBURG - After Sunday's overtime upset over No. 1 Maryland, No. 8 Virginia field hockey was unable to overcome a 2-1 deficit and fell to William & Mary for the first time since 1995. The No. 12 Tribe (9-2) are off to their best start since 1980.

The Cavaliers (6-3) earned their one goal on a direct corner shot with 14:51 left to play in the first half. Senior tri-captains Mason White, Carrie Goodloe and Jess Coleman combined on the play to put the ball in the cage and net Coleman her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Virginia totaled 12 penalty corners in the game but only capitalized on one.

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Emily White, this week's ACC field hockey player of the week, managed seven saves on the evening, but it was not enough to keep the Cavaliers on top. William & Mary's Katie Silverthorne sneaked the Tribe's first goal by White with 24:42 to play in the first half. Virginia battled back 10 minutes later, but William & Mary took the lead for good on a penalty corner in the second half. The Cavalier defense successfully protected the goal on the Tribe's first three corner attempts of the half, but sophomore Kelly McQuade put the ball in the net on her team's fourth try with 18:37 to play. William & Mary forced a total of nine corners in the game.

All evening, the Cavaliers fell just short - a corner shot with 26:07 left in the game clanked off the right post - but were unable to string together a solid effort.

"We didn't work hard enough," Virginia coach Jessica Wilk said. "We have major corrections to make, we need to improve every aspect of our game."

"We played poor defense," Goodloe said. "We played as individuals and not as a team. We didn't convert on attack. We thought because we were good on Sunday we'd be good today and that's not how it works."

Virginia has a chance to make those changes tonight in front of a home crowd when it hosts Appalachian State at University Hall Turf Field at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers (4-4) bring the sting of a 7-0 loss to Duke on Sunday to Charlottesville, but also boast senior Christina Settle, a Northern Pacific conference offensive player of the week who has four goals and two assists on the season.

The Mountaineer offense was able to put together seven goals against Catawba College last week, but they often have trouble with ACC-caliber programs.

"They're up and down," Wilk said. "They've got some talent. The one advantage of this situation is that we do have another game [tonight] so we can come out and get back on track."

"We need to get our act together," Goodloe said. "We need to start playing good hockey because if we don't, it's going to be a long weekend."
