Cavs win in OT to finish unbeaten

It took nearly four minutes of overtime, but the Virginia men's soccer team completed its first undefeated season since 1995 Friday night with a 2-1 victory over James Madison at Klockner Stadium. Virginia junior forward Ryan Gibbs found the back of the net after taking a perfect cross from junior midfielder Jonathan Cole in the 94th minute of play to give the Cavaliers (16-0-1) the win.

"It was a great goal," Virginia coach George Gelnovatch said. Cole "played a terrific ball."

With his ninth goal of the season, Gibbs sealed the Cavaliers' unbeaten regular season before a crowd of 3,829.

"I think that's what great teams do," Gibbs said. "They find a way to win no matter what."

Virginia dominated much of the first half and out shot James Madison (10-5-1) six to four. Despite the constant Virginia pressure, the James Madison defense held together. The Dukes also received stellar play from their goalkeeper Josh Kovolenko, who made three saves during the contest.

"They defend very well," Gelnovatch said.

Less than two minutes into the second half, however, the Dukes' senior Michael Godwin chipped in a failed Virginia clearing attempt from 10 yards out to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead.

The Cavaliers punched in the equalizer during the 59th minute of play. Virginia junior Kyle Martino sent a free kick toward the James Madison net that midfielder Kenny Arena one-timed past Kovolenko to tie the game. The goal was Arena's third of the season.

Virginia continued to pressure the James Madison defense after tying the game, but could not push across the winning goal in regulation.

Virginia's best opportunity for a win came with just over one minute to play. Virginia sophomore forward Alecko Eskandarian took a pass from Martino down the right side and sent a shot ricocheting off the post.

Defense was Virginia's strong point throughout the match. The Dukes could not develop quality scoring opportunities and managed only seven shots to the Cavaliers' 14. Virginia also received strong play from junior goalkeeper David Comfort, who posted five saves in the win.

Next on the Cavaliers' schedule are the ACC tournament beginning Friday and the NCAA tournament starting Nov. 24.
