Virginia field hockey (13-7, 3-3 ACC) dismissed Duke, 3-1, Thursday in the first round, but fell to Maryland, 4-1, Friday in the semifinals to take third place in the ACC championship tournament this weekend at Chapel Hill.
Three different Cavaliers contributed to the scoring against Duke. Katie Nicholson put Virginia on the board first after Rosie Walker fed her a pass on her own rebounded shot. Senior co-captain Carrie Goodloe earned the second goal of the night on a corner, and with 2:34 left to play, Cara Unterkofler took the ball downfield and tipped it in.
Virginia was not as lucky Friday when Maryland was able to get four goals past the Cavaliers' defense for a resounding win. Coleman and Goodloe combined for the Cavaliers' only goal of the game, a field goal with 5:30 left to play.
