Art Guepe, who coached the Virginia football team from 1946-52, died Saturday in a Florida nursing home. He was 86 years old.
Guepe was a star quarterback for coach Frank Murray at Marquette. When Guepe graduated in 1937, Murray moved to the head coaching position at Virginia and Guepe began as coach of Marquette's freshman squad. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Guepe took over from his old coach at Virginia in 1946.
In the six years he coached at Virginia, the Cavaliers never had a losing season. His overall record at Virginia was 47-17-2, which made him the winningest coach in school history until George Welsh took the helm.
