The Associated Press preseason rankings list the Cavaliers at No. 11, the highest ranking ACC team behind No. 1 Duke and No. 2 Maryland, who stand atop the list.
The preseason ranking is the highest for Virginia since it was tabbed at No. 1 in 1982-83, during the Ralph Sampson era.
The Cavaliers return four starters this season: junior guard Roger Mason Jr., senior wings Chris Williams and Adam Hall and junior center Travis Watson. All averaged in double figures in points last year.
The Cavaliers compiled a 20-9 record in head coach Pete Gillen's third year with the program, reaching the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1997 and posting back-to-back winning seasons in the ACC for the first time since the Ralph Sampson days.
Virginia finished last season at No. 24 in the Associated Press poll.
