Virginia looks to continue early-season dominance

After soundly beating a ranked Penn State team, the Virginia swimming and diving team will look to continue its success when it hosts the nine-team Cavalier Invitational today through Saturday at the Aquatic & Fitness Center.

On Nov. 18, the 11th-ranked men improved to 3-0 with a 131-105 home win over the No. 25 Nittany Lions. Sophomore Ian Prichard led the Cavaliers by winning two events. The men won 9 of 13 total events.

The 15th-ranked women also improved to 3-0, beating No. 14 Penn State, 130-111. Senior Megan Roesch, junior Mirjana Bosevska and sophomore Carlie Dykehouse each won two swimming events. Junior Alison Sharp swept the diving competition for Virginia.

The Penn State meet "definitely [boosted] our confidence up," sophomore Luke Anderson said. "The Cav Invite is one of our biggest and fastest meets."

The eight other teams competing in the Cavalier Invitational are Central Connecticut, Columbia, Richmond, Texas A&M, UMBC, Villanova, Yale, West Virginia and West Chester.

"The Cav Invite is not a big meet outside of" Virginia, Anderson said. "This is a time where we can get up and swim fast and race ourselves."

Virginia coach Mark Bernardino said he thinks the competition will come from different places in the men's and women's competitions.

On the women's side, "Texas A&M is an awfully powerful and talented team," Bernardino said. "On the men's side, you've got lots of different programs with lots of different talents."

Bosevska, and All-American, said she thinks the toughest competition will not come from other schools' swimmers, but from her fellow Cavaliers.

"Our best competition is going to be ourselves," she said. "Usually at this meet, we race hard with each other."

Traditionally, the Cavalier Invitational is an important meet for NCAA qualifying times, according to Bosevska.

"I'm looking forward to the Cavalier Invitational because usually that's where a lot of people make their NCAA cuts," Bosevska said of qualifying times. "We're going to be resting a little before that."

Preliminaries begin at 11 a.m. today and tomorrow and at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with finals starting at 7 p.m. each day.

Regardless of the outcome, Bernardino said his team is swimming well and that it will continue to find success if its members keep swimming at the level they are now.
