Friends of University and alumni soon may find photographs of the Rotunda in their e-mail inboxes, thanks to a new feature on the school's Web site.
"Virtual Postcards" enables Web surfers to send a postcard of the University, along with a personalized message, via e-mail. The new site debuted Wednesday and has already received immense positive feedback, said Nancy Tramontin, the University's director of Web communications.
A few months ago Tramontin, Bob Sweeney, vice president for development and public affairs and the President's chief of staff, Amy Cronin, were looking for improvements to make to the University's Web site when they hit on the idea for "Virtual Postcards."
"We have been trying to add functionality and interaction, especially for students," Tramontin said of the group's goals for the Web site.
Tramontin said she hopes the postcards will "help foster community and outreach. We are hoping that alumni will come to the site and want to send a postcard to one of their classmates."
Prospective students also could use the site to get a better feel for the University's physical appearance, she added.
But the primary intention of the Web site is for current students to send postcards to family and friends, Tramontin said.
The selection of photographs, taken by freelance photographer Rich Sisson, represent the general look and feel of the University with 16 artful images of the school's architecture and landscape. Snapshots of the chapel and the Lawn, buried in white during the recent snowstorm, reflect the winter season.
"We will probably change the pictures seasonally," Tramontin said. "Probably in the spring we will use garden scenes as well as scenes from finals."
According to Tramontin, the fledgling site is enjoying comments from both students and faculty, who find the site entertaining and useful. The postcard Web site received 700 page views from midnight on Wednesday to 11 a.m. Thursday, despite its recent and discreet launch.
The postcards are available through the "Current Students" and "Alumni" links on the University's home page.
