Fiji begins recolonization after three year absence

Leaders of Phi Gamma Delta's (Fiji) recolonization efforts expect their chapter will offer the University a unique fraternity experience this spring.

Fiji, which closed in May 1999 because of financial difficulties and low membership, is now recruiting men for its official return to Grounds.

Fiji Director of Expansion Joe Falk said the fraternity's selectivity will distinguish the chapter from other fraternities on Grounds.

"Our expectations are to have one of the highest GPAs, to have members highly invested in leadership groups and community service work, and that the men will maintain a reputation for gentlemanly behavior," Falk said. "We want a fresh new fraternal experience for students who want to become members of a values-based fraternity."

Fiji Field Secretary Josh Morita said the fraternity will be distinctive in its "strong balance between social activities and academics."

A vigorous recruitment process already is underway for new members.

With a hazing-free eight-week pledge process that mainly is recommendations-based, Falk said Fiji will be able to ensure the quality of membership demanded.

"Starting up again, we will naturally attract men with energy and leadership," Morita said.

Although the official recruitment schedule ends March 1, Falk said that the admissions process is ongoing, and recommendations will continue to be accepted throughout the spring and next fall. He expects membership near thirty men.

"The important thing is we're not shooting for a specific number. We select men on whether they meet our criteria," he said.

Aaron Laushway, assistant dean of students for fraternity and sorority life, said he believes such an admissions approach is beneficial to the fraternity.

"The process affords men of the University, student and faculty alike, to nominate men who are believed to be serious about the founding values of Phi Gamma Delta," Laushway said.

He added that the alcohol-free housing Fiji will offer next fall indicates the return to such traditional principles.

Both Laushway and Falk said that new members will be part of a historical, and personally rewarding, effort.

"Fiji offers the opportunity to be a founding father, and leave a legacy on Grounds that will last a lifetime," Falk said.
