Laundry love

Romantic intrigue is back in the most unlikely of college settings: the laundry room.
Second-year College student Jarrett Conaway has set his recently completed script of the short film "SudLuv" in the world of washers, dryers and dirty clothes.
With the crew and shooting location in place, Conaway is only missing the cast.
Auditions start today for the comedy that centers around three male characters and one dirty escapade. The main roles are male chauvinists Tim, Clark and Jake, the "semi-nerdy, Clark Kent" type, Conaway said.
When Jake claims to have had a romantic excursion in the laundry room with the "personification of male desire," Veronica Sparks, the film cuts to a flashback of the supposed encounter.
The film is Conaway's brainchild. In addition to writing the script, he also is the director and executive producer for the film. He is joined by third-year College student Carlos Marulanda for lighting, first-year College student Akil Thornton for sound, first-year Engineering student Alex Freed as the cameraman, and first-year College student Samantha Freeman as the casting director.
The supplies and money needed to produce even a short film are not trivial. But Conaway and his crew found the necessary cameras, boom microphones and tripods at Clemons Media Center.
The Housing Department gave Conaway permission to use Cauthen laundry room as the film set. And the publicity efforts, which Conaway, Freed and Thorton funded, amounted to less than $100.
Conaway said he spent a lot of time thinking about how to make the marketing as effective as possible. He utilized his position as a member of Residence Staff to spread the word to other RAs and residents. He also papered Grounds in flyers and table tents featuring eye-catching, sultry scenes.
Conaway plans to enter "SudLuv" in this spring's Salmagundi film festival held in Newcomb Theater. Once the film is complete, he also plans to start serious work on his next two projects, including an as-yet-unnamed horror film taking place in the Alderman Library stacks.
The auditions are today from 8 to 10 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. in Cauthen room 134.
"We highly recommend that everyone read the script before then," Conaway said, which can be accessed online at www.people.virginia.edu/~asf8q.
He said those auditioning should be comfortable with the foul language and sexual aspects of the film.
