"Advisory Committee"
Mirah

Out to further prove she's more than just the Microphones' Niko, Mirah's "Advisory Committee" begins with the explosion of the gallavanting "Cold Cold Water," a whimsical western fantasy wrapped in Phil Elvrum's lush production. The album carries on in a dreamlike trance where acoustic simplicity slips in and out of lavish, surrealistic fantasy which refuses to be pinned down, all while Mirah, who has grown pleasantly more intimate, seduces with a disengaged ease. Overall, a sweet painkiller best taken with equal dosages of "Vespertine" and "The Glow Part 2."

Newcomb Hall Theater

Tonight, 7 & 9:30 p.m., $3

From acclaimed director Francois Ozcon comes a story lifted from the tabloids and doctored by the Brothers Grimm. Alice and her timid boyfriend Luc carry out the gruesome murder of a classmate, then flee to the woods - only to be imprisoned by a greedy ogre. This film draws upon the witty exploration of sublimated desire showcased by Ozcon's earlier feature SITCOM, and anticipates UNDER THE SAND's sophisticated visual style.
