The Black Fraternal Council elected third-year College student Michael A. Dunkley, a member of the Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., and second-year College student Rowland Webb Jr., a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the new co-chairmen of the Council yesterday evening in Newcomb Hall.
Dunkley and Webb both were highly optimistic about their new positions.
"We as co-chairs in our newly appointed positions want to keep the BFC as one of the more powerful organizations on campus through positive programming, community service, social events, forums and the principles that unite us all," Dunkley said after the elections.
Webb expressed similar goals for an atmosphere of activism.
Our goal is "an energetic environment in which there are always programs available," Webb said. We want to create "unity and more creative ideas throughout the black fraternity and sorority communities."
Second-year College student Okem Nwogu, also a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., was elected vice-chair of the BFC.
Nwogu cited lack of activism in the black community as a problem he would like to combat in his position.
"We want to hold forums that will combat an African-American apathy and show African Americans that there are so many outlets we can thrive in," Nwogu said.
Among other elected officials are third years April Kelly, who will serve as Corresponding Secretary, Raynelle Deans, who will serve as Recording Secretary and Christine Boschulte, who will serve as Treasurer.
The BFC consists of black Greek fraternities and sororities.
The next BFC-sponsored forum, scheduled for Thursday evening in Maury Hall, is entitled "Partying While White," and will address recent theme parties in which racially coded language was used to promote the event.
The issue was first addressed by third-year College student Tim Lovelace in a guest viewpoint in the Cavalier Daily.
The Black Fraternal Council is currently in a transitional stage during which the newly elected officials will be acclimated into their positions.
"The co-chair elects will be handling many of the responsibilities of the current co-chairs," said outgoing co-chairman Kevin Stokes, a fourth-year member of the Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.
