News in Brief

Second-year College student Dorian Stacy Brown died Sunday, March 10, as a result of automobile accident injuries sustained March 6. Brown was a bus driver for University Transit Service and graduated from Monticello High School.

Brown's obituary in the March 12 Daily Progress remembers her as someone with a "luminous smile" that enjoyed "gymnastics, diving, reading, hanging out with her friends and her cat, Teddy."

Brown is survived by her parents, Joyce Brown, Christopher Pax, Dexter Griffin and Susan Nesbit; her sisters, Miranda Pax and Kathryn Nesbit; and other loving relatives.

A memorial service for Brown was held Wednesday, March 13 at the University Chapel.

Brown was laid to rest at Twin Oaks Community Cemetery in Louisa County, which was her place of birth.

In lieu of flowers, Brown's family asks that she be remembered through donations to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad or to the charity of the giver's choice.

Warner will not declare Civil War memorial month

Gov. Mark R. Warner announced last Thursday that he will not issue a proclamation this year marking April as a month of Civil War remembrance.

Warner announced publicly that he wants to "hold a dialogue with all Virginians about our shared history and future," but sees a Civil War remembrance month as a dividing issue between Virginia's black and white communities.

Before making his decision, Warner met with three Confederate heritage groups.
