Serving the University Community Since 1890

News in Brief

Hoping to combat childhood hunger in the Charlottesville community, University coaches announced they will host the first-ever Taste of the Game fund-raiser May 5.

Twelve University coaches will offer training on fundamentals and advanced strategies to local area youth and families who participate.

Coaches also will speak in a number of information sessions on a range of topics including sports conditioning and maintaining a balance between academics and athletics.

Tickets for the one-day event will be $15.

Board of Visitors approves parking garage design

The Board of Visitors Building and Grounds Committee last week approved a preliminary design for a new parking garage to be built near the Cavalier Inn.

The garage, which will hold 1,180 parking spaces, will provide more spaces for University students, employees and visitors to park. It also will offset the loss of parking that will result from construction of a new basketball arena on Massie Road.

Current estimates say the parking structure will cost the University $17.5 million.

Members of the Lewis Mountain neighborhood association voted unanimously to oppose construction on the garage March 4.
