After weekend deliberations, the Honor Committee announced last night College representative-elect Chris Smith will chair the Committee for the 2002-2003 year.
"It's a weighty responsibility, I have big shoes to fill," Smith said. "My job will be a lot easier due to the strength of the new executive committee."
Joining Smith on the executive committee are College representative-elect Brad Robinson as vice chair for trials, College representative-elect Duncan Brook as vice chair for education, Law representative-elect Seth Whitaker as vice chair for services and Commerce representative-elect Christie Graham as vice chair for investigations.
"This is such an experienced committee," Smith said. "It's been great to get to know each other, as we move forward - we're a team."
Smith and the other new executive committee members will take control of the Committee April 2.
The executives-elect share common goals, especially enhancing education about honor throughout the University.
"We need to reach out to everybody around the University, every group, every CIO, every fraternity," Brook said. "We want to make education relevant to those we are presenting it to - everyone has a different perspective."
"The primary goal is gaining and maintaining the support of every student and faculty member," Smith said.
The executives-elect expressed hope they could follow the lead taken by the outgoing Committee, while leaving behind issues that monopolized their time.
"The last Committee focused on Bloomfield [cases] because they had to," Whitaker said. "There is an opportunity now for the new Committee to stop Bloomfield from happening again."
Smith agreed that the outgoing Committee had to spend a great deal of time on Bloomfield cases.
Diversity, in everything from race to athletes to those involved in Greek life, is another issue on which the incoming Committee will focus.
"Diversity, especially of the counsel pool, is something we want to work on," Robinson said. "It will be helpful to have better representation from every school."
The new executive committee members emphasized their excitement and eagerness to begin.
"It's a great bunch of people," Brook said. "We're excited to get to work."
As chairman-elect, Smith said although he might be the more public face of the Committee, he feels the new Committee is one that will work very closely together.
"As chairman you have to be a leader on and off of the fourth floor of Newcomb," Smith said. "However, this isn't my Committee, just as this isn't the Committee's honor system, it is the students'."
"We are the newest guardians of a proud and noble tradition," Smith said. "We cannot forget that"
