Christmas named ACC Player of the Week
Virginia attackman John Christmas was named ACC Player of the Week for his play against Johns Hopkins Saturday. Christmas, a freshman from Ardmore, Pa., was instrumental in the Cavaliers' 12-6 victory over the No. 1 Blue Jays. He took over a game that was tied at six early in the third quarter, taking part in the final six goals for the Cavaliers. He assisted on four goals in the third quarter and scored two goals of his own in the fourth quarter. He also scored the game's first goal. Christmas finished the game with three goals and four assists. His seven points were the most by a Virginia freshman since 1996.
Teamer named national Freshman of the Year
Virginia forward Brandi Teamer was named National Freshman of the Year by Gballmag.com, an online basketball magazine. Teamer, a freshman from Joliet, Ill., started all 30 games for the Cavaliers, finished second on the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game and led the ACC in rebounding with 8.9 rebounds per game. She earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors six times and led the ACC with 13 double-doubles.
Byars named Parade All-American
Virginia basketball signee Derrick Byars was named to the Parade All-American High School Basketball fourth-team Monday. Byars, a 6-foot-7 forward from Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn., averaged 23.2 points, 10 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.5 steals this season while leading Ridgeway to the Tennessee Class AA state championship.
