Hoos in Playboy

In the past, the University has made it on the cover of US News and World Report. It has been heralded as a fine institution of higher learning and student self-governance. It has been rated number one in academics, athletics and alumni relations.

Today, we make Mr. Jefferson proud once again with yet another distinction: Virginia has been voted the "sweetest" of playboy.com's Sweetest 16 Tournament.

The "lady Cavaliers" of the University were voted the hottest coeds in the country during playboy.com's "Sweetest 16 Tournament." Beating out Southern rivals Florida and Alabama, Virginia's women received 3,025 votes to come out on top over Yale University in the final matchup.

Playboy's Sweetest 16 were selected by playboy.com's editorial staff from a collection of photographs of college women who have posed for Playboy in the past. Many of these photos were left over from Playboy's popular October issue, which featured college women from all across the country.

After a grueling three-week, four-round tournament, Virginia blew away Oregon in the Final Four and then topped Yale to earn the distinction as the most attractive college women in the country.

Though faring well in the NCAA Sweet 16, University of Maryland did not enjoy such success in the Playboy tournament, falling out after the Elite Eight.

Second-year Engineering student Ryan Ewalt, Inter-Fraternity Council publicity spokesman, told playboy.com that the news would not come as a surprise to University students.

"When the girls on campus find out [they won], I don't think they'll be surprised," Ewalt said. "They're beautiful, and if they don't already know it, a poll like this just confirms it."

The tournament was a first for Playboy.com.

"We do a number of polls featuring beautiful women surrounding sporting events," playboy.com's spokeswoman, Lauren Sigman, said. "So this year we decided for the first time ever to do a Sweet 16."

"The women were bracketed just like the teams in the NCAA tournament, then people were asked to come to playboy.com and cast their vote," Sigman continued. "The championship came down to Yale and Virginia."

Ousting the Ivy League school gave Virginia the distinction of "Sweet Virginia" and a link from playboy.com's homepage to a special page dedicated to the University's "team."

A woman identified as Brandi High on the Playboy Web site represented Virginia's roster. In order to see the rest of the lineup, a viewer must subscribe to the Playboy cyber club.

As prospective students make their college decisions this spring, perhaps they will keep Playboy's Sweetest 16 Tournament in mind.

"Students usually visit in early fall or in the springtime," Ewalt told playboy.com, "and in that kind of weather women here always look ... very nice"
