A Monticello Association committee has recommended that descendants of Thomas Jefferson's slave Sally Hemings not be allowed full membership in their organization.
According to the Richmond Times Dispatch, James T. Truscott, the association's president, said, "The bottom line is ... that to be in the association you have to be a lineal descendant of Jefferson and pay dues. If you don't have a solid paper trail, you're not in. There's no way for descendants of slaves to have a paper trail."
The association will meet at Monticello in May to vote on the recommendation.
"I'm afraid it's going to be a long and boisterous meeting," Truscott said.
Many scholars, as well as the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, have said it is likely Jefferson fathered some of Sally Hemings' children.
Some scholars say descendants of Jefferson may not be related to him but instead related to an uncle or other male relative of his.
"The day will come when Hemings' descendants will be buried in the same row I'm buried on," member Lucian Truscott IV said.
University mock trial team places third in nation
The University mock trial team placed third in the American Intercollegiate Mock Trial Tournament in St. Petersburg Fla., last weekend.
This was the first national competition the group attended.
The team was awarded second place in their division, and third overall, out of 40 teams.
"With this victory, we hope the group will advance further in next year's regional competition," President Jillyn Pullara said.
