The Virginia women's club tennis team placed third at the national club tennis tournament in Austin, Texas this past weekend. Fourth year Maria Mier, second year Lauren Dickey and first years Maria Cristina Muguruza and Jill Waters all had wins to help the team compete for the top spot in the tournament.
While those four players were in Texas for the national tournament, other team members traveled to Virginia Tech Sunday.
Fourth years Priya Acharya and Claire Shean, third years Shannon Christensen and Sarah Bouchard and second years Jannel Horney and Jenny Chang all had wins to help the team defeat Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, 8-1.
Next weekend the team travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to compete against Duke, N.C. State and North Carolina in hopes of continuing their undefeated season.
The Virginia women's rugby club continued their successful run through the spring season. The Virginia women beat West Chester March 23 with a score of 25-5 to secure their fourth consecutive entry at the national Division I Sweet Sixteen to be held in Orlando, Fla. April 20 and 21. The Cavaliers followed up on that success by defeating longtime nemesis Princeton on the road to earn the No. 4 seed in the Sweet Sixteen. Their opponent will be the winner of the Southern California Rugby Union.
This past weekend, the Cavaliers won the Cherry Blossom Tournament in Washington, D.C. The Cavaliers have won every tournament they've entered this year: the Appalachian State Tournament, the Virginia State Championship Tournament, the Savannah St. Patrick's Day tournament, the Virginia Women's Invitational tournament and the Cherry Blossom Tournament.
The Cavaliers return to action in Charlottesville Saturday afternoon against in-state rival James Madison in the Mad Bowl at 1 p.m.
