Welch named ACC track & field performer of the week

Virginia's John Welch was named ACC track & field performer of the week yesterday after provisionally qualifying for the NCAA championships in the javelin with a throw of 234 feet, five inches at the Duke Invitational this weekend. His throw was the top mark in the ACC this season.

Welch, a senior from Upper St. Clair, Pa., earned All-American honors last season with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA championships. He was the ACC javelin champion in 1999 before redshirting in 2000. He finished second in the ACC last season.

Dennis earns ACC weekly softball honors

Virginia pitcher/first baseman Kristen Dennis was named ACC softball player of the week for the third time this season Monday.

Dennis, a senior from Encinitas, Calif., finished with a 5-1 record as a pitcher last week, in addition to batting .500 in those games. She had a perfect 4-0 record in leading the Cavaliers to the Tar Heel Invitational title April 6 and 7. In addition to her gaudy batting average, she hit three doubles and two home runs and collected six RBIs.

Gill named ACC men's lacrosse player of the week

Virginia attackman Conor Gill was named ACC men's lacrosse player of the week Monday. He is the fourth Cavalier in a row to earn the honor.

Gill, a senior from Lutherville, Md., keyed the Cavaliers' 10-9 victory over North Carolina Saturday with two goals and two assists.
