Doubles point lifts Cavaliers over Terrapins on the road

Coming off its first ACC win of the season against N.C. State, the men's tennis team extended its conference winning streak to two games by beating Maryland, improving to 2-5 in the ACC this season.

The Cavaliers used the same doubles lineup that clinched the win over the Wolfpack. Virginia won two of three doubles matches to claim the deciding point. The No. 1 doubles team of Jonathan Chou and Michael Duquette captured their first win of the season in only their second match together.

Virginia dropped the No. 2 doubles, but the No. 3 doubles team of Gregg Alpert and Stephen Nolen won their match, clinching the doubles point, while Chou swept his match at the No. 5 singles, and clinched the meet with his third consecutive win.

Nolen and Jason Romesburg also won their singles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots respectively.

Davenport to be honored with field name

The field at the University's newly renovated baseball stadium will be named Davenport Field in honor of Thomas Edward "Ted" Davenport, a former captain of the baseball team who spent 30 years overseeing fundraising for Virginia athletic scholarships.

Davenport was a 1953 graduate of the Curry School, after being a two-time captain and All-State selection from the Virginia baseball team. He took over as executive director and secretary-treasurer of the Virginia Student Aid Foundation, and served from 1958 to 1988, overseeing more than $29.4 million in gifts to Cavalier athletic facilities and scholarships.

Davenport's involvement with Virginia sports did not end there. He served as head coach of the baseball team from 1960-61 and head coach of the golf team from 1979-81. After leaving the VSAF in 1988, Davenport took over as chief operating officer for the Virginia Athletic Services Foundation, managing Birdwood Golf Course.

The dedication of the field will take place on Saturday after the second game in a three-game series against Wake Forest.
