Sophomore trio leads Virginia to best ever finish
The Virginia men's swimming and diving team took 11th at the NCAA championships in Athens, Ga. Saturday. Three
sophomores took home first team All-America honors as the Cavaliers beat their previous best mark of 12th place in
2000.
Sophomores Luke Anderson, Gary Marshall and Ian Prichard helped the team post a new high of 157.7 points in NCAA
championship competition. Anderson finished sixth in the 100 meter freestyle to earn his first team All-America
accolades, an honor shared by Marshall for his seventh place finish in the 100 breaststroke, and Prichard for his
sixth place finish in the 1650 free. Anderson was a six-time All-American at the championships, earning accolades
for his performances in the 50 and 100 freestyle and the 800 free relay.
Cavaliers show up big at Raleigh Relays
The Virginia track and field team had a strong showing at the Raleigh Relays last weekend, with two women
qualifying provisionally for NCAA championships.
Senior Dawn Cleary broke her own record in the steeplechase and took first place with a time of 10 minutes and 25.49
seconds, finishing ahead of Virginia's Melanie Mathews, who took second place in the same event. Both provisionally
qualified for NCAA championships.
Junior sprinter Kiamesha Otey took second place in the 100 meter dash. The women's 4x800 and 4x1500 meter relays
also took second and third place respectively.
The men's 400 meter relay provided the highlight on the men's side, finishing sixth overall, while senior Jarret
Hagwood finished seventh in the hurdles.
