First varsity eight garner ACC weekly honors
After coming from behind to take the grand final victory at the George Washington Invitational Crew Classic, the Virginia women's rowing team's first varsity eight boat was named ACC Crew of the Week.
The boat was comprised of coxswain Betty Shumaker, rowers Hayley Nunn, Madeline Engel, Molly Baker, Lauren Mitterer, Jen Reck, Meg Van Dam, Carolyn McMillian and Amanda Kennedy.
Trailing Columbia in the last 500 meters of the last race, the Virginia women surged ahead to take the lead and finish with a winning time of six minutes, 35.1 seconds, more than two seconds ahead of Columbia.
Last weekend's victory marked the seventh consecutive victory for Virginia at the GW Invitational.
This weekend, the Cavaliers will return to action at another event that they have managed to dominate - the ACC women's rowing championships. Virginia look for it's third straight title in Clemson, S.C.
Alumnus Valhaly named USTA player of week
The United States Tennis Association named Brian Valhaly, a Virginia graduate and former member of the men's tennis team, circuit player of the week. Valhaly was chosen because of last week's victory over Michael Chang in the First Serve Entertainment Men's Championships in Tarzana, Calif.
Valhaly's victory over Chang sent him to the tournament final, where he fell to Eric Taino, 6-2, 7-6 (6). This was Valhaly's second nomination as circuit player of the week this year.
Last year, after graduation from the University in May, Valhaly won two titles on the professional circuit, and won 18 of his final 20 matches.
