Student Council appoints executive members

Student Council named its 2002-2003 executive committee appointments Friday. The group will be led by third-year College student Sarah Jobe, who will serve as next year's Council chief of staff.

"I have done a lot of committee work during my time on Council," Jobe said. "I feel I can be a great resource to the committees."

Currently, Jobe serves as a College representative, committee chair for the Good Old Song Committee and a member of the Parking and Transportation Committee.

"Sarah is overqualified for this position, and I'm confident she will do a wonderful job," Council President-elect Micah Schwartz said.

In her role as chief of staff, Jobe will oversee and support the activities of Council's committees, such as the Student Arts Committee and the Academic Affairs Committee. She also will serve as an assistant to the president.

On a lighter note, Jobe added that "it should be a lot of fun."

To round out the executive officer appointments, Council tapped first-year Darden student Andrew Rose to serve as its next chief financial officer.

"Increasing the connectedness between North Grounds and main Grounds was one of the things that motivated me" to apply, Rose said.

The CFO is responsible for handling all of Council's finances and creates a budget for the 2002-2003 school year. The budget must receive approval from the representative body.

Council's Chief Technology Advisor handles the organization's technical initiatives and keeps the representative body apprised of new programs. He also oversees the Council Web site and will be in charge of a new online course evaluation system if plans for such a project become a reality.

Third-year Engineering student Alex Robart looks forward to stepping up to this position.

"I feel that the Internet is a powerful medium and can help to make Student Council more relevant to the students' lives," Robart said.

Third-year College student Ryan McCarthy will hold the position of Coordinator of University Committees next year. He will serve as a liaison between University committees and Council.

McCarthy also will handle all administration, faculty, staff and student appointments to University committees such as the Athletic Advisory Council and the Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action Committee.

Schwartz expressed excitement to work with the new group.

"I am really excited about this group," Schwartz said. "They are a dream team of executive officers, and they will do a great job handling Student Council's activities next year"
