Maryland sophomore Chris Wilcox announced yesterday he will enter the NBA draft, leaving the Terps just after helping them to a national title last month.
Wilcox was Maryland's third-leading scorer, averaging 12 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.5 blacks last season. It was not until the Terps' 11th game of the season that Wilcox secured his spot in the starting lineup, but his athleticism and explosiveness quickly made him a potential lottery pick.
According to the Washington Post, Wilcox consulted with his mother during a visit to North Carolina last weekend, then returned to College Park today to talk to Maryland coach Gary Williams and clean out his dorm room.
"I think Chris will have a great career as a pro," Williams said. "He has outstanding athletic skills and as a professional, he will continue to develop his outstanding potential."
The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 13.4 points through six NCAA tournament games, but had his best game of the season with a 23 point, 11 rebound performance over Duke in College Park.
Many observers believed that Wilcox's skills still were somewhat rough, and that he could have benefited from another season at Maryland, but he will likely be one of the top prospects in the draft.
With the loss of Wilcox to the pros and the graduation of seniors Juan Dixon, Lonny Baxter and Byron Mouton, the Terrapins will have only one starter back for next season: guard Steve Blake.
