Hospital, library incur storm damage

A thunderstorm caused $16,700 worth of damage to two University buildings Tuesday night.

Hospital West and Wilson Hall suffered water damage during the downpour that began late Tuesday evening.

There was "more damage than usual" in a thunderstorm, Director of Facilities Operations Chris Willis said.

Willis added that high intensity rain overpowered the storm drains, preventing the water from being carried away quickly enough.

Approximately $15,000 will be necessary to repair Hospital West, where water flooded the sub-basement and impaired the elevator system.

Wilson Hall suffered $1,700 worth of damage when rainwater penetrated doors and walls at the building's south end.

The building also sustained tree damage from high winds, as well as some landscaping damage, Willis said.

Alderman library also suffered leakage from several holes cut by the construction crew working on the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library.

However, according to University spokeswoman Louise Dudley, the contractors will be paying for these damages.

The construction crew "had cut some openings into the library related to special collections, and they hadn't completely sealed them off," Dudley said. "As I understand it, the contractor will be responsible for covering cleanup and repairs in the library."

The valuable manuscripts in the special collections section of Alderman were not harmed, though some books in other parts of Alderman library were dampened.

Willis called the on-Grounds repairs a mere "nuisance and cleanup work" that should be taken care of within the week. Funding for repairs of this kind come from the University maintenance account.

Dudley said she doubts the damage will interfere with the summer session schedule.

Another recent instance of costly water damage at the University occurred last April when a drain on the roof of Memorial Gymnasium failed, causing flooding in offices, according to Willis.
