The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association named four members of the Virginia women's first varsity eight crew to the All-South Region team for their accomplishments during the spring. The first team All-South honors went to seniors Madeline Engel and Lauren Mitterer, with sophomore Jennifer Reck also being named to the first team. Senior Coxswain Sarah Brennan was named to the All-South second team.
Two rowers also were recognized for their excellence in the classroom, as Reck and senior Meg Van Dam were named National Women's Rowing Scholar-Athletes by the CRCA. To be eligible for this award, you must achieve at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA, be at least a sophomore in college and been apart of the school's first varsity eight team for at least 75 percent of the races throughout the 2002 rowing season.
The Cavaliers also were successful as a team, as the first varsity eight team finished 10th at the 2002 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships, with the entire team finishing fourth in the combined team standings. Virginia has been a part of the last six NCAA championships.
