Missi Sanders makes return as assistant field hockey coach for the Cavaliers
Last week, head field hockey coach Jess Wilk named Missi Sanders as the next assistant coach.
Sanders was the head coach at Virginia from 1993 to 1998. But at the end of the 1998 season, Sanders resigned to concentrate on her family. She is married to current Virginia soccer head coach George Gelnovatch, who just returned to the United States after serving as an assistant coach on the 2002 United States World Cup team.

Sanders will be a welcomed addition to the team, as she has six years of head coaching experience at Virginia. She was named National Field Hockey Coaches Association and ACC coach of the year in 1997, when Virginia advanced to the NCAA semifinals, which was a first in the Cavalier program.
Virginia reached the No. 1 spot in the country during each of her last three seasons (1996-98) as Virginia head coach. She is known as a defensive specialist, which is evidenced by her 1997 team that led the country in scoring defense.
