Gillen receives Xavier honors
Virginia men's basketball coach Pete Gillen has been announced as one of the fall 2002 inductees into the Xavier University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Gillen was the head coach at Xavier from 1985-1994, before becoming head coach at Providence and eventually moving to Virginia. Gillen is Xavier's winningest men's basketball coach, with a 202-75 record over nine seasons. In all but one of his seasons as head coach, Xavier competed in the postseason: seven NCAA Tournament appearences and one run to the quarterfinals of the National Invitational Tournament.
In the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, Gillen led his Xavier teams to six regular season championships and five conference tournament championships. Named MCC coach of the year five times, Gillen led his game to seven 20-win seasons.
Gillen's induction is set for November.
