The Black Fraternal Council will kick off the 2002-2003 school year Thursday with "Meet the Greeks," a conference attracting students who are curious about traditionally black fraternities and sororities on Grounds.
"Meet the Greeks" is an annual event of the BFC, serving as its formal introduction to Greek life.
This year, scheduled activities will include presentations of the various chapters, a mini-organizational fair and a question and answer period.
It will begin at 8:30 p.m. in Webb Lounge.
"Our objective is to open the lines of communication between non-Greeks and Greeks," said BFC Co-Chairman Michael A. Dunkley, a member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. "This helps to eliminate stereotypes and misconceptions."
Dunkley said that "Meet the Greeks" is not exclusively targeted at first year students.
"Our goal is to promote the council as a whole to the incoming class of students, as well as those who are non-Greek and simply want to learn more," he added.
Aaron Laushway, assistant dean of students of fraternity and sorority life, said "Meet the Greeks" provides an opportunity for black fraternities and sororities to gain new membership.
In addition to distributing information about black fraternal organizations to students, "the obvious impact is the hopeful interest in joining and helping the ranks to increase," he said.
Dunkley said he agrees spreading information is important in the BFC's mission to foster black fraternity life.
"The more we as a council can educate those who are non-Greek about what we do, the more people will be able to see themselves as part of the Greek community," he said.
