D.C. Mayor launches expensive ad campaign
Washington, D.C., mayor Anthony A. Williams commenced a $225,000 advertising campaign for the Democratic nomination for his November reelection bid yesterday, turning to both television and radio to get his name out for the Sept. 10 primary.
Williams was forced to run a write-in campaign after being disqualified from the ballot for submitting a petition with fraudulent signatures, including those of Martha Stewart and Robert DeNiro.
Williams' main opponent for the nomination is Willie F. Wilson, an Anacostia minister struggling to find the funding to compete with Williams' campaign.
Wilson also is running a write-in campaign and has received several key endorsements including former D.C. mayor Marion Barry.
Williams' advertising efforts target most heavily at middle-class black neighborhoods. A poll conducted by the Washington Post published Sunday indicated that Williams has a healthy lead over Wilson across all demographics.
Several other individuals also are running in the primary, including James Clark, Osie Thorpe and the one-name candidate Faith.
