Virginia cross country opens ranked No. 16 nationally
While still not into the regular season, the Virginia women's cross country team is ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division I standings. After being ranked as high as No. 12 during the 2001 season, and finishing ninth in the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2001 -- the best finish for the Cavaliers since the 1982 NCAA Championships -- Virginia is ready for the 2002 season. The Cavaliers will open the season at home when they host the Lou Onesty Invitational this weekend. ACC opponents ranked in the Top 30 include N.C. State (No. 3), North Carolina (No. 6), Duke (No. 11) and Georgia Tech (No. 24).
Virginia women's soccer ties Southern California
The Virginia women's soccer team followed up a 4-3 overtime loss to UCLA Friday night with a 0-0 draw against Southern California yesterday afternoon in the UCLA Women's Cup.
Friday night's showing included unassisted goals from freshman forward Noelle Keselica and senior forward Alyssa Benitez, as well as a impeccably placed free kick from senior midfielder Kelly Worden, before the Bruins' Kim Devine scored the game winning goal eight minutes into the first overtime.
Throughout Virginia's scoreless second contest, the Cavaliers and the Trojans traded a nearly equal amount of shots on goal (11 and 12 respectively), but neither squad was able to finish.
The Cavaliers now have an even record of 1-1-1 and are ranked No. 5.
