Field Hockey earns second consecutive shutout
After a scoreless first half against Southwest Missouri State in which Virginia collected three consecutive short corners before the break, the Cavaliers roared back to capture the only goal of the game.
Keeper Emily White, who ranks 11th for saves in Virginia history, stopped 12 shots, giving the Cavaliers their second consecutive shutout of the season.
Senior Cara Unterkofler gained control of the ball following a tackle, passing it off to ever-reliable midfielder Kelli Hill, who in turn dribbled upfield. Freshman Sara York found the ball and ran it up 35 yards to send a reverse stick shot around the keeper for the game-winning goal, the first of her career.
Crowell, Brown earn ACC weekly honors
Virginia football players Elton Brown and Angelo Crowell were selected yesterday as ACC Players of the Week following the Cavaliers' 34-21 upset of No. 22 South Carolina on Saturday night.
Brown, a sophomore offensive guard from Hampton, Va., was named the conference offensive lineman of the week. He graded out at 90 percent in the victory over the Gamecocks and did not allow a sack.
Crowell, a senior linebacker from Winston-Salem, N.C., racked up 12 tackles in the victory. He also caused a fumble, recovered a fumble, and collected three tackles for loss. He leads the Cavaliers with 33 tackles, good for third in the ACC.
The Cavaliers have a bye this week and return to action on Sept. 21 at home against Akron.
