Gill earns MLL Rookie of the Year honors

Former University standout Conor Gill was named Major League Lacrosse's Rookie of the Year at yesterday's 2002 MLL Awards Luncheon in Columbus, Ohio. The Boston Cannons made Gill the third overall pick in last year's draft.

Gill finished third on the team in total points after amassing 20 goals, 16 assists, 36 points and 30 groundballs, many of them during an explosive second half of the season.

"He's the kind of player that can do it all, whether it's scoring, passing or playing on the ride," Cannons coach Scott Hiller said. "Conor is definitely the right choice for this season's MLL Rookie of the Year."

Gill ended his Virginia career as a three-time All-American whose 146 assists place him in a tie for second place in ACC history. He also places seventh in the conference for career points, with 223.

Cavs fall to rival Hokies despite third game rally

The Virginia volleyball team lost to Virginia Tech 3-0 in Blacksburg on Tuesday night.

After dropping the first two games 30-22 and 30-18, Virginia rallied behind the tough play of hitters Paige Davis, Katie Synan and Celeste Laborde in the third game, responding to a 5-point deficit with a 13-4 run. A Hokie squad that outhit the Cavaliers .192 to .025 refused to quit, however, and took the final game, 30-28.

Junior libero Whitney Ashcraft recorded double-digit digs for the sixth consecutive match, and led the Cavaliers in the category with 13 on the night.

Another bright spot in the Virginia offense was the play of freshman setter/outside hitter Kristin Chaney. Chaney had 27 assists, six digs, and a pair of blocks in the match.
