Three former Cavaliers named to ACC anniversary men's basketball team
Former Virginia men's basketball stars Jeff Lamp, Barry Parkhill and Ralph Sampson were named to the 50-member ACC 50th anniversary team.
Lamp, who was a first-round selection by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1981 NBA Draft, was a first-team All-American selection in 1980-1981. He appeared in three NITs and the Final Four in the 1981 NCAA Tournament.
Parkhill was a first-round selection by the Portland Trail Blazers. In 1972, Parkhill led the ACC in scoring (21.6 ppg), was named ACC Basketball Player of the Year and ACC Athlete of the Year. The previous year, he established Virginia's single-game scoring record of 51 points.
Selected by the Houston Rockets as the NBA's 1983 No. 1 draft choice, Sampson earned Rookie of the Year honors. He holds school records for rebounds, field goals and blocked shots on top of holding the fourth-highest record for career scoring. He was a three-time National Player of the Year. Besides three Rupp trophies, two Eastman trophies, and two John R. Wooden trophies, he led Virginia to a 1980 NIT championship and the 1981 NCAA Final Four.
Georgia Tech end Gathers hospitalized after outburst
Georgia Tech defensive end Greg Gathers was hospitalized after being found visibly upset with an unloaded gun during an adverse reaction to medication for a kidney ailment, which had sidelined him for the season.
Since being released, he has remained under doctor's care. Tech's all-time leader in sackshas been diagnosed with minimal change disease.
