Players from Georgia schools suspended for summer play
Georgia Tech, Georgia and Georgia State all are facing suspensions for 12 basketball players competing in an unsanctioned summer league.
The 12 players took part in the Kenny Smith Pro-Amateur League at Morehouse College this summer. The league was certified by the NCAA for play from July 17 through Aug. 11, but the games started on July 13. The players are being forced to sit out a game for each illegal game they played.
All three schools are appealing the suspensions to NCAA officials, who will consider the cases tomorrow. If the appeal is denied, Georgia will lose guards Ezra Williams and Damien Wilkins for their opener against Texas on Nov. 15.
Georgia State starting center Nate Williams will have to sit out two games along with Kendric Alloway and Herman Favors. Three more starters, Leroy Davis, Lamont McIntosh and Cedric Patton, as well as reserve Daniel Towns, face one-game suspensions.
Georgia Tech would not release the names of their three suspended players. The three men will be sitting out for their season opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 23.
