College at Wise students attack SGA president

Three University of Virginia College at Wise students were charged and released on bond Monday for assaulting fellow student Jimmy Joe Adkins.

Stephen Wade Hopkins, 25, Jeremy Lyn Male, 27, and Keynen Ry Almer, 23, are accused of stripping off Adkins' shirt and chain necklace and hitting him with the chain.

They were released on $25,000 bond Monday after being charged with abduction and assault of the victim.

Adkins, Wise's Student Government Association president, is a member of the Gamma Chi Omega fraternity.

The accused are members of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity and apparently were angry that a rival fraternity's letters were painted on Hopkins' house.

Wise asked the males not to return to school. Their hearing is scheduled for Oct. 16

Rent too high for

low-income families

A study from the National Low Income Housing Coalition reported that in order to afford the cost of living in Charlottesville, a person earning minimum wage would have to work 104 hours a week.

It defined an affordable home as one that did not exceed 30 percent of a household income.

Based on data from the 2000 Census and Department of Housing and Urban Development, the report said an average two-bedroom apartment in the city costs $693 a month.

Many low-income households rely on public housing units or Section 8 vouchers to live in private units.

About 800 families currently are awaiting vouchers.

Last week Burnet Commons, a city-funded neighborhood, broke ground off Elliot Avenue. The project will provide 36 housing units at a price of up to $250,000.
