Sports in Brief

Volleyball falls to FSU and Florida A&M on the road

The Cavaliers opened their Florida road trip with a 3-1 loss to the Seminoles (30-23, 23-30, 30-16, 30-27). Florida A&M would also prove to be too much for Virginia as they fell to the Rattlers for the first time in a series of four contests. Despite a promising start, the Cavaliers eventually were overwhelmed by a solid Florida A&M squad that downed Virginia 3-1 (28-30, 30-23, 30-24, 30-28).

The Virginia effort was spearheaded by sophomore middle Alexis Geocaris who recorded 11 kills, four digs and two service aces.

Women's soccer falls to Terrapins

The Cavaliers dropped Friday night's 2-0 decision to Maryland at College Park, with the Terrapins out-shooting Virginia 12-6. Neither Virginia nor Maryland had many opportunities during the wet contest, but the Terrapins managed to capitalize on one just before halftime when Kim Kong buried what would be the game-winner.

Following through in the second half, Maryland got off the first five shots of the half, turning the fifth opportunity into a goal. While Virginia mounted an effort to make a comeback, the Terrapins had sealed the win.

Men's soccer falls to Tigers 3-2 in double overtime

The Cavaliers attempted to rebound after going down 2-0 early on -- the effort was enough to take Virginia into OT -- but not enough to secure an ACC victory. The loss comes on the heels of three consecutive shutout wins and drops the Cavaliers record to 6-5 (1-3 ACC).

The Tigers dominated the first half, scoring after only 58 seconds and following up with a second goal at 30:39. Clemson held onto their lead until halftime, but the Cavaliers made sure to answer in the second half when junior forward Alecko Eskandarian scored his 15th goal of the season, followedby a tying goal from senior Ryan Gibbs.

While neither team could convert during the first overtime, Clemson found a way to win in the second. The Tigers' Dimelon Westfield scored with 8:32 remaining in the period.
