With three terms as congressional representative for the 5th District of Virginia under his belt, Republican Virgil H. Goode Jr. remains confident that his experience as a legislator and member of the House Appropriations Committee will enable him to shuttle federal dollars to his economically-troubled home state and rural district.
"We need a greater federal investment in the economy of the 5th District of Virginia," Goode said. "I have been fortunate to secure, through my work on the Appropriations Committee, many millions of dollars in direct investment in the 5th District."
In his campaign against Democratic challenger Meredith Richards, many pundits think that Goode's experience in Congress should serve as one of his most important assets, because his work on the Appropriations Committee has generated funding for a number of highways and other transportation projects within the region.
Goode also supports prescription drug benefits for seniors, the elimination of the marriage and death taxes and the protection of social security, though he has said he hopes to encourage increased private retirement investments.
