The Virginia women's crew team will finish their fall races this weekend when they host the Rivanna Romp at the Rivanna Reservoir on Sunday at 9 a.m.
Both the Virginia varsity and novice teams are coming off terrific efforts, with the novice team dominating Georgetown at home last weekend.
The varsity squad has had plenty of time to prepare for the Romp, as they haven't participated in a race since The Princeton Chase on Oct. 27. In that event, the women's Varsity "A" boat eight finished third in the competition, while the Varsity "B" boat finished second in the women's fours competition.
The Cavaliers improved their times significantly in The Princeton Chase, and the coaches expect the same type of performance during this weekend's race. Last weekend the novice boat followed up the terrific performance of the Varsity team, excelling in a set of home races against Georgetown.
The Virginia "A" and "B" boats dominated the competition, finishing almost 30 seconds ahead of the closest Georgetown boat. Virginia Asst. Coach Kara McPhillips, who coaches the novice team, said her team had a terrific race against a very sound set of Georgetown boats.
"We were happy with the results of last weekend's races," McPhillips said. "I hope we can keep it up into the last competition of the fall season, so we will have something positive to hold onto as we go indoors for practice during the winter."
After the Rivanna Romp, the Cavaliers will not race again until the spring season, which will start on March 16. The Cavaliers' time off between races has been well spent, as McPhillips believes that Virginia will be ready to race this Sunday.
"Our practices have been going very well," she said. "I think both teams will be ready to race when the time comes, and I know we are all excited to finish the fall racing period on a high note."
The varsity team is led by captains Jen Reck, Claudia Durkin and Molly Baker. Reck is a freshman, while Durkin and Baker round out the trio as sophomores.
"We have had several good practices over the last two weeks," Reck said. "We had to change our lineup a little bit because of some injuries, but I think we will be okay going into the last race. It would be a big lift for the entire team if we could go out and win the last race in our fall set, just so we could feel good about ourselves during the monotonous winter practices."
The Cavaliers will face off against Ohio State, Clemson and North Carolina, three tough teams. The Varsity Eight competition will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the novice eight at 10 a.m. The fours competition will round out the day, and they are slated to begin at 11 p.m.
