Medical school applications decrease throughout nation
For the sixth consecutive year, figures released by the Association of American Medical Colleges showed a drop in applications to medical schools.
The statistics released Wednesday indicated 33,501 people applied to medical school this year. This was a 29 percent drop in applicants since 1996, when applications peaked at 47,000.
Figures showed a 4 percent decline since last year.
Despite concern over the loss of interest in medical professions, the association was optimistic about projected 2003 statistics breaking the streak of decline.
Figures showed a 6 percent increase in the number of students who took the Medical College Admissions Test this year.
A corresponding increase was shown in the number of applications received for next year thus far.
