In Latin, "vox" means "voice." And so VOX, an affiliate of Planned Parenthood, is dedicated to giving 18- to 25-year-olds a voice in advocating reproductive health.
Completely student run, the new organization is not merely a spokesgroup for Planned Parenthood, said fourth-year College student Emily Damgaard, VOX vice president. Instead, the group aims to increase the educational levels of students about reproductive rights, Damgaard said.
"I wanted to take part in the spreading of the word," Damgaard said.
To increase student awareness of VOX, Damgaard and fourth-year College student Alexis Conway, VOX president, will lead a forum at 7 tonight in room 301 in Wilson Hall.
"We will be having the forum discussion to explain what emergency contraception is, how it works and the legal aspects involved with it," Conway said.
Popularly known as "the morning after pill," emergency contraception can be used up to 72 hours after a woman engages in unprotected sex, Conway said.
Beginning with a brief introduction about emergency contraception, the pair said they will devote a large part of the forum to a question-and-answer session to give people a chance to talk about their perceptions of this method of birth control.
"We would love people to come out even if they believe they are fully informed about emergency contraception, because there are a lot of myths surrounding it," Conway said.
