Albemarle County Police arrested Virginia sophomore shooting guard Jermaine Harper early yesterday morning for driving under the influence after his blood alcohol level was measured at .17 percent.
According to Albemarle County police records, Harper was arrested at 3:36 a.m. yesterday morning near the intersection of Ivy and Gillum Ridge Roads. He was held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional jail for several hours and released yesterday around 10 a.m.
A DUI, which is a class one misdemeanor, is punishable by a maximum of 12 months in prison and a $2,500 fine.
Virginia law dictates that anyone with a blood alcohol level of at least .08 percent is considered under the influence.
Harper's court date is scheduled for Jan. 27, 2003.
Harper, who was considered to be a contender for a starting position on the 2003 Virginia men's basketball team, already faces repercussions from his arrest regarding playing time on the court.
"Jermaine Harper is suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules," Virginia Media Relations Director Rich Murray said. "He will not practice or play in games during the suspension."
Murray said head coach Pete Gillen levied the suspension against Harper.
Harper already has faced one suspension this season, when he sat the bench during Sunday's exhibition game against Big Apple for breaking team rules.
Harper, a California native, played all 29 games during the 2001-2002 Virginia men's basketball season, averaging 5.8 points per game.
He also was the co-recipient of the Cavalier's Mr. Hustle Award.
Although last season was Harper's first playing college basketball at the University, he was no stranger to the area.
Having attended Blue Ridge School, Harper was selected the 2001 Central Virginia Player of the Year by the Daily Progress.
