Virginia takes second at Cavalier Open

The Virginia women's cross country team finished secondbehind Georgetown University at the Cavalier Open, held at Panorama Farms on Saturday.

Junior Kelly Behan led the team in the 6K race with her 12th place finish in 22:50.40, followed by junior Lauren Chaikin in 16th and sophomore Jessica Ellis in 18th. Emily Hampson, Kristen Haughey, Heidi Sonderman, and Shannon Hawrylo also scored for Virginia. Unattached athletes, not included in scoring, took the top five spots in the women's race.

The men's squad, led by freshman Mat Gutridge, placed third overall behind William & Mary and Georgetown.Gutridge finished the 8K run in 26:52.50, good for 17th, while teammates James Atchison and Kevin McHale placed 18th and 22nd, respectively.Mike Lyng, Pat English, David Glynn and Brian Kayser rounded out scoring for the Cavaliers.

Because Panorama is such a challenging course, Saturday's competition was a good indicator of how much the runners have improved since the Lou Onesty Invitational, the Cavaliers' other home meet.

Head coach Jason Dunn said that because it was an off week for the athletes who competed at ACC's and will compete at Regionals this coming weekend, "it was a good opportunity for other team members to get in one last race during the championship season."
