Men's and women's swim and dive teams beat Penn State
Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams improved to 3-0 on the season by beating The No. 14 and No. 16 Penn State men and women, respectively, in State College, Pa. on Saturday.
The 10th-ranked Cavalier men were led by freshman Francis Crippen, who won the 1650 free in a time of 15 minutes, 9.32 seconds, beating second-place finisher and teammate Dan DeMarco by almost 31 seconds. Crippen added a win in the 500 free in 4:30.15 and came behind sophomore teammate and first-place finisher Bo Greenwood in the 400 individual medley. Greenwood finished with a time of 3:54.13.
Other Cavalier winners included sophomore Michael Raab, who took the 200 butterfly in 1:48.52 and junior Pete Amstutz tallied 315.83 points to win the one-meter diving competition.
The Virginia women beat the Lions with a solid 127-114 margin. Sophomore Andrea Georoff competed in three events, anchoring Virginia's winning 400 medley relay that finished in 3:48.38. She also placed first in the 50 free (23.66 seconds) and 100 free (51.00 seconds).
Cavalier senior and All-American Cara Lane qualified for the NCAA Championships by taking first in the 1650 free with a time of 16:21.62, 18 seconds faster than teammate Rachael Burke, who beat the NCAA B qualifying standard. Lane was the first in the 200 butterfly in2:02.16, as Virginia swept the top three spots in that race. Lane was named the ACC women's swimmer of the week for her performance. Lane's fellow senior All-American, Mirjana Bosevska won the 400 IM and 500 free.
Virginia diver Lisa Silvestri took the one and three-meter diving competitions with scores of 289.20 and 310.72.
Virginia's next meet will come on December 6-8, when the Cavaliers compete in the Auburn Invitational.
