Cavaliers hang on to defeat Chaminade

Twenty years ago Chaminade defeated Ralph Sampson and the then-No. 1 Cavaliers 77-72 in one of the most shocking upsets in basketball history. On the 20th anniversary of that game yesterday, Virginia again took on the Division II Silverswords. This time, despite being up by only four at the half, Virginia held on to win 86-72.

Despite his four fouls, Travis Watson was sent in early in the second half to help Virginia on a 19-3 run that sealed the victory. Watson finished with the 40th double-double of his career, compiling 16 points and 14 rebounds. Watson leads all active players in the ACC in career double-doubles. Devin Smith scored 16, while Elton Brown scored a new career high of 22 points.

Quarterback McPherson booted from Seminoles

Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden dissmissed Seminole sophomore starting quarterback Adrian McPherson from the team yesterday for undisclosed reasons.

McPherson reportedly was going to be questioned by police concerning a forged blank check. McPherson has not been charged in relation to the check incident yet. The Florida State media relations department only would comment that the incident did not involve gambling or point shaving, but McPherson will not be allowed to participate in any future games and will be dismissed from school after the current semester.

McPherson has obtained the services of Attorney Grady Irvin, who said that Florida State acted in haste.
