Virginia places 18th in fall Sears Cup Rankings

The University earned 172 points from the competition of its cross country, field hockey, football, soccer and volleyball teams to rank 18th in the 2002-2003 Sears Directors' Cup standings.

The final standings will be posted after the completion of the spring season, with points awarded for the final standings of 20 sports, 10 male and 10 female. National champions receive 100 points.

Stanford is on top of the fall standings with 443 points, with Penn State second at 364 and Notre Dame third. Last year, Virginia finished 27th in the Division I rankings.

Guard Todd Billet named ACC co-player of the week

Men's basketball junior guard Todd Billet received ACC co-player of the week honors after his 24-point performance against North Carolina Jan. 11. The Cavaliers beat UNC, 79-72, in University Hall.

Billet shared honors with Dahntay Jones of Duke University. The transfer guard shot 53.5 percent from the field and was 6-for-11 from three point range. He is averaging 12.8 points a game and leads the ACC in free throw shooting at 93.3 percent.

ACC swimmer of the week is Virginia's Crippen

Freshman swimmer Fran Crippen was selected ACC men's swimmer of the week after winning two events in the Cavaliers' defeat of NC State Jan. 11 in Raleigh.

Crippen won the 200 fresstyle and 500 Free against the Wolfpack, more than 2 seconds better than the second place finisher in the 200. He qualified for the 2003 NCAA championships in the 500 free with his time of 4 minutes, 18.54 seconds.
