Coach Bob Knight becomes fourth college coach to earn his 800th career victory

After 38 years of coaching college basketball, Bob Knight, coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, recorded his 800th career victory on Wednesday in a 75-49 win over Nebraska. Knight became only the fourth Division I men's basketball coach to reach the 800-victory mark. The emotion of the crowd in Lubbock, Texas chanting "800" during the final minutes of the game carried over to the Red Raider players after Knight's post-game conference, when his players gathered around to hug and jump on their coach. Knight now can look ahead to surpassing other members of the 800 club as he continues his coaching career. Dean Smith of North Carolina (879), Adolph Rupp of Kentucky (876) and Jim Phelan of Mount St. Mary's (827) all have more Division I victories than Knight. With Smith and Rupp already out of the college basketball coaching ranks and Phelan set to retire at the end of this year, Knight is in a position to take over the all-time record. With the 800 win mark now in hand, Knight can refocus his efforts on bringing his Texas Tech squad back to prominence in the Big 12 conference.
