Determination, hard work -- and ice cream

Virginia sophomore center Brandi Teamer has had no trouble eating up ACC defenses this season.

Tonight however, she encountered some trouble with a pre-game meal of banana splits.

Teamer was announced to start the game but vomitted behind the bench seconds before tip-off after devouring more ice cream than her stomach could handle, forcing a last minute change in the starting lineup.

"I had a heck of a lot of ice cream before the game," Teamer said. "I had one of my own, and than I ate the rest of Lynnete [O'Reggio's] and some of [assistant coach] Audra [Smith's]."

Teamer was able to come off the bench with 16:18 left in the first half and still managed to feast on the Maryland defense despite getting sick early on.

She scored a team-high 23 points and carried the squad offensively in the second half, but not before scaring Virginia coach Debbie Ryan right before tipoff.

"Right when we were sitting down [Teamer] said 'I can't go', and I said 'You can't go where?" Virginia coach Debbie Ryan said.

"I was hoping she could get back in, and after a couple minutes she took some antacid and tried. Obviously she did pretty good, maybe she should play sick all the time."

Teamer managed to play 10 minutes in the first half and scored eight points.

It was in the second half, however, when she really showed she wasn't going to let a little stomach problem keep her from dominating a basketball game.

When the Cavaliers fell behind by three with 9:45 remaining, Teamer made it clear that it was time for her to take the game into her own hands

"What Brandi did was she came into the huddle and told me to give her the ball," Virginia coach Debbie Ryan said. "She said 'Come to me every time and I'll score.' We went in to her almost every posession that we could."

The Cavaliers listened to their star center and gave her the ball. She scored six points in less than two minutes to tie the game at 58.

With just over two minutes remaining in the contest, she sunk a rare three-pointer to ice the victory for Virginia.

Running down the court after nailing the three, Teamer's big smile proved that an ACC road victory could be much sweeter than a pregame banana split.

She finished with 11 of the team's last 21 points to lead the Cavaliers to victory.

Surprisingly, ice cream feasts are not an unusual occurance for the Cavaliers.

"We usually have some [ice cream] before each game," Teamer said "But, it's never bothered me before."

"But you've never had three banana splits before," senior guard Liz Sahin said.

Devouring three desserts may have been too much for Teamer to take, but she proved last night that her talent and resolve are much stronger than her stomach.
