Track Teams Compete at Penn State National Track and Field Open

The Cavaliers put on a top-rate performance last weekend, with highlights from both the men's and women's sides. From the women's team, a noteworthy performances came from Vika Osipenko.The senior pole vaulter set a new school record of 12 feet when she became the first Cavalier woman ever to clear this height.Eliese Mitchell took first place in the weight throw with a distance of 59-7.For the men, Andy Filachek placed second in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14 minutes, 31.62 seconds, while teammates Matt Ruhl and Tom Ellis finished sixth and seventh respectively.Kiamesha Otey placed third in the long jump with a distance of 5.99 meters and came in fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.71.Jane Maxwell took fourth in the 5000 meter run with a time of 16:54.03 and Sharon O'Connor was fifth in the mile with a time of 4:51.66.Assistant coach Dana Coons took the title in the 3000 meter run with a winning time of 9:25.00.The teams are back in action Feb. 21-22 at the ACC Indoor Championships in Chapel Hill, NC.NCAA Indoor Championships will be held March 14-15 in Fayetteville, AR.

Women's Club Water Polo Team Competes in Emory Invitational Tournament

The Women's Water Polo team played four games over the weekend, including two games against nationally ranked opponents.On Saturday, Virginia began the tournament with a victory over the host No. 12 Emory by an 11-10 margin.The Cavaliers scored successive wins over Vanderbilt 13-8 and Virginia Tech 20-1. Virginia then took on No. 3 Florida for the championship Sunday.The Cavaliers held a lead over the Gators at halftime, but lost 11-8 in the end.

Graduate student Erin Girard andCollege student Krystal Ball were named to the All-Tournament Team.Virginia is a member of the CWPA Mid-Atlantic Conference, which includes University of Pennsylvania, Penn State, West Chester, Indiana University, Maryland, Richmond and James Madison University.CWPA Mid-Atlantic conference play begins March 15-16 with a home tournament at the Aquatics & Fitness Center.
